A Grateful Heart/Blogiversary Winner

The guest speaker spoke about being thankful, it was after all November and Thanksgiving was just one week away. A timely reminder to show and give gratitude.

I couldn’t help but overhear a conversation two fellow attendees were having as they were standing right next to me. They were discussing how difficult it is to give thanks to God when things go wrong in their lives. The one lady sighed and explained to her friend that she knew the bible says to give thanks for all things but she found that hard to do.

I struggled with that same question for many years. I thought I had to say thank you to God for every situation, good or bad that came my way. I thought of those who have had horrendous atrocities done against them and wondered if I were to experience some of what they had suffered would I be saying “Thank you”?

No. I would not. Just being honest.

So how do we give thanks to God when life as we know it crashes in around us? When tragedy comes barging through our door? When loneliness is our constant companion?

Lets look at the verse my fellow attendee was referring to: 1 Thessalonians 5:18

“Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

Did you catch what it said?

“Give thanks in all circumstances.”

That’s right! In not for all circumstances. This puts an entirely different perspective on the why we give thanks.

We are able to worship and praise the Lord during difficult circumstances because His love for us doesn’t waver.  His compassion never fades. He is not for us one moment and against us the next.  He remains faithful. In His mercy He has forgiven and redeemed us. He has seated us with Him in the heavenly realms. He gave His only son to pay our debt all because He loves us as dearly beloved children….

…and we in turn are grateful!

So lets cultivate a daily habit of gratitude, returning a heart of love to the one who loves us. Then when life throws us a curve ball we will be able to give thanks in all circumstances.

Whether you are eating roast, deep fried or smoked turkey with family, or a turkey burger on your own. I pray this thanksgiving will be marked by a grateful heart.

Happy Thanksgiving
